I read your answer to Laura, I too have a lilac tree in the corner of my yard. I also have a chain-link fence where several branches have grown through to the park side. They have blooms on them and MY side of the tree has none, ha. Well I'd like to cut the branches on the park side and try to propogate/plant at another property. Can you advise me on how to do this properly? I also read that the shoots take 4 to 5 years before they bloom. Question, why would anyone want these shoots to continue to grow and have a half dozen trees next to each other? I cut them as often as I can. Can you advise me? Thanks : Hi Dianne, : Gosh, that was strange how your message didn't show. Anyway, what I think I read is that you want to propagate more of your lilac and you want to do it with the branches from the park side that is blooming. By the way, is yours pruned into a tree like a lollipop? I'm thinking you want to use these because they are the ones with blooms. Correct? If so, you don't need to use the ones that have bloomed to do it. Here's a site that tells how to propagate the cuttings. : http://www.hort.purdue.edu/ext/prop.html : The best way to propagate your lilac is to dig up the shoots that come up and move those with roots attached. Guess I just answered your question about the shoots that come up. They also replace the ones that become old and less productive. Those are pruned to the ground. : There are several reasons why lilacs stop blooming or blooming well. Look at these sites for info on that. : http://gardencenter.southernstates.com/lawn_garden_faq/lilactree.shtml : http://www.heardgardens.com/lilacqa.htm : Hope this answers your questions. : Newt Dianne, I just realized that I forgot these sites that should be helpful. Must have been a senior moment! ;-) Some good pictures too. http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/hil/hil-8700.html http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/greenhouse/ornamentals/prop.html http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/BODY_MG108
